An Adaptation from Ash-Shaykh Bazmuul's Sharh Sifatis Salatin Nabiyy

Question: What is the way of saying Al Isti’aadha?

Answer: The authentic from the ways of saying al isti’aadhah are as follow:

The first way: It was mentioned in The Mighty Book: A’undhubiLlahi mina Ash-ShaytaanirRajeem. As it is in Soorah An Nahl: 98

So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaitan.

The second way: This is also mentioned in The Mighty Book: This is not (explicitly) mentioned in Al Qur’aan, but it generality comprises it. Allah knows best.

The third way: It was reported in the Sunnah, and the compiler –rahimahuLlahu- mentioned it: “A’undhubiLlaahi mina Ash ShaytaanirRajeem min hamzihiwanafkhhiwanafthhi

The fourth way:This was also reported in the Sunnah, and the compiler –rahimahuLlaah- mentioned it: “A’undhubiLlaahi As Samee’ Al ‘Aleem mina As ShaytaanirRajeem min hamzhiwanafkhhiwanafthhi

Al Isti’aadha should be uttered silently not loudly! It was neither reported from the Messenger sallaLlaahu ‘alayhiwasallam nor from the companion nor the taabi’een that they use to utter it loudly in the Salaah. Likewise the recitation outside the Salaah, you will only say it within yourself not loudly.

BENEFIT FROM ASL SIFATIS SALATIN NABIYYvol.1 pp.275-276

Al Imaam Al Albaanee writes:

Seeing refuge from the three devils is authentic strengthened with the combination of these routes, and the increment “As Samee’ Al ‘Aleem” is also strengthened in the narration of Abu Sa’eed with a good chain as was previously mentioned. Thus, it is appropriate to be saying it occasionally [Ahmad also said this in Masaail ibn Haanee {1/51}].

But restricting it to “A’undhubiLlaahi mina Ash ShaytaanirRajeem” I don’t find any narration for it, except in Maraasil Abee Daawood (which was reported) from Hasan (Al Basree): The Messenger of Allah used to seek refuge (thus): “A’undhubiLlaahi mina Ash ShaytaanirRajeem.(It was mentioned in At Talkhees vol.3 p.306).

Despite that, it was not explicitly mentioned “in the Salaah”, yet it is Mursal (a report from a taabi’ with an ascription to the Prophet), it is not suitable for evidence according to the majority of the Muhadditheen, especially since it is one the maraasil al Hasan Al Basree.

Despite this, the Shaafi’yah – except a handful of them – are of the opinion that it is better to summarise, citing the evidence with: So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaitan.

It is not hidden that the verse is mujmal (précis), it does not contain the description of al isti’aadhah, and then it is an obligation to return to the Sunnah (to understand it). You have already known what is authentic in the increment. Then it is more appropriate to hold onto it…
