‘…We send signs not except to instill fear…’ [Al-Israa: 59]
Qataadah said: Indeed Allaah the Mighty instills fear in the people with what He wishes of signs so that they will take heed from them and turn to Allaah. There was a tremor in Kufah during the time of Abdullah bn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him; he came out and exhorted the people as thus: ‘O people, verily your Lord wants you to turn to him, please do.’
He also reported that that there were series of earthquakes in Madeenah during the time of Umar bn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, he said: ‘You have innovated (sins and heresies); by Allaah if it (the earthquake) were to reoccur, I shall act (against you all).’
The Messenger of Allaah – sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam – said a similar thing in the hadith both recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim wherein he said: ‘Indeed the sun and the moon are two signs from the signs of Allaah; they do not eclipse because of the death of anybody or a birth but Allaah sends them (when they eclipse) to instill fear in His slaves, when you see them (eclipse) hasten to His remembrance, invocation and forgiveness…by Allaah, if you know what I know, you will laugh but little and cry much.’

The phenomenon of natural occurrences ravaging the world at present is a clear indication of the weakness of man. Despite man’s claim to stupendous technology, the ‘disasters’ are unleashed while he looked on helplessly as his wealth and property are destroyed. Is this not an enough lesson for those still doubting the Power and Ability of Allaah, the Creator and Cause of these natural occurrences (which we have inadvertently named ‘disasters’ in a subtle way of detesting them and the Power behind) to come to Him on their knees?
While we commiserate with those who have become affected by the occurrences, whether in Benue, Florida or Cuba, we however believe the happenings are not just by chance rather in the Perfect Universal Will of Allaah – the Creator. Therefore, impugning blame to Allaah regarding these occurrences is belying His Will and Ability – the Mighty. Allaah did not make mistake in allowing the occurrences rather to send a lesson, among others.
‘Indeed in that is reminder for he who has a heart and can listen while he is a witness.’ [Qaaf: 37]
