Muslims and the Scourge of Democracy

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem

Out of the numerous systems of governance man has fashioned for himself, democracy remains most notorious, war-like, intoxicating, maddening and that is more likely to cause the end of man. Those who choose it as the best option of governance are now confused, and are intrinsically tired of it. It has become a monster difficult to curtail. Though they still fanatically but delusively believe democracy is the way despite its having brazenly become a scourge upon them and the populace it has been foisted on.

They say democracy is the rule by the people, for the people and to the people. That has been the centurial scam ever. Democracy no doubt is a mob government – if you like call it a mobocracy. Everything about it is rowdiness and lack of orderliness. Haven’t you seen a parliament in action? It is usually a scene of fracas where grown-up adults – fathers and mothers of a generation to come – throw jibes and jabs at one another. It happens everywhere they practice democracy even in the so-called developed countries including Amerikka. Elections do not select the best rulers, most often the worst of the people. Haven't we seen drug barons winning elections even from prisons? No wonder Aristotle, of the Greek mythology, did say democracy is a rule by the majority fools. A majority may select to be daft and foolish.

If you were to follow the majority of those on earth, they will mislead you from the Path of Allaah.

No sane person will deny the fact that democracy is chaos in governance. It is wasteful, intimidating, fear-instilling and menacing. An election time has usually been a period of fear, spread of calumnies, waste of time and resources. The amount spend on campaigns is enough to feed the nation - if Allaah wills. There is no doubt that the people exhibit their foolery more during elections. You will see an otherwise rational human being dancing about in the name of campaigning for a candidate. Women have been made instrument of scorn while men are tossed about as if they are mannequins.

The people’s minds are easily manipulated in a democracy. When a politician comes around and bamboozles the people with false promises and throwing of some wads, there you see people who have vowed to do otherwise swinging hips to his tunes. Everything seems to be about money – money is a determinant factor of where people will go in elections. Even at the polling booths, money buys people over. The conscience seems to be permanently sealed by the devil who is at the control center of the democratic scheming.

In the Islamic understanding, democracy is a system of disbelief. There can never be any justification for it. Believing in democracy is believing that a system of governance is better than what Islam has brought. The pivot of democracy are people, people! What do these ‘people’ do? They make laws for themselves according to their whims. If they like they can say, men and men are now free to marry one another. If they like they can say cannabis should be legalized and made an export material!

Do they seek the rulings of the time of ignorance?

Democracy is a government of the time of Jaahiliyyah – ignorance. No good Muslim will decry that position of Islam.

The best democrat is the most cunning, craziest, most criminal-minded [who will not mind removing the life of an opponent proving a stumbling block], most wasteful and most irreligious of the people. You will see him swinging party allegiances at will as if he is being remotely controlled. Those whom he said were evil yesterday have become his allies today. There are no permanent friends and enemies in democracy but permanent interest, they often say. Democrats can go as far as assassinating one another when there is ‘enmity’, yet he can go back to the other camp of those who he had wanted to assassinate when the ‘enmity’ is no more. What determines the ‘enmity’? Greed, avarice, love for wealth and fame. The belief in voodoo and fetish is another hallmark of the democrats. Whenever a righteous Muslim joins in the fray, the story afterwards has never been nice. Show us a Muslim democrat who was hitherto righteous and maintain the same?

Should the right-thinking Muslims join in democracy or not has been the debate in some Muslim quarters for some time now. There is no doubt that there is no success of any form in democracy for the Muslims. Alhamdulillah, that some people have realized this fact in a hard way now. There was a time some Muslim youths began a serious canvass for votes for some politicians in a South West state of Nigeria thinking that their yearnings and aspirations would be met; today the reverse is the case. Ask them of their view about their messiahs of last time, they would heap insults and curses on them. That is democracy for you. If a politician wants to be good, democracy will teach him to be otherwise. If it does not the system will frustrate him.

Therefore in the present fray, aligning with Islam is the way. One, democracy is a system built on disbelief of a higher magnitude, two, it may make one loose the hereafter so easily. So why will a Muslim trade his hereafter with this world? Will you exchabge that which is lowly with that which is better? Those Muslims of Sunnah extractions still singing and dancing for democracy should know that their efforts will end in futility as the efforts of those before them did.

The thought that if you cannot beat them join them is devilish and will have a serious after-effect. If the Muslims are steadfast, no enemy will harm them. Therefore saying if we do not join them, the Kuffaar will rule over us is misplaced. No doubt, some Muslims will be heedless, some might not even be aware of the evil of democracy thus thronging it unabated, the warning and sensitization should however continue.

Caveat: Democracy is disbelief but not all the Muslims who find themselves in it are disbelievers even though they are very close to it. The rulings regarding Muslims democrat differ from one individual to another. Some are completely out of Islam, some are on the way out, some are preparing to leave. It is a dangerous game for a believer in Allaah and the Last Day. Also, those who become our leaders via democracy are still our leaders, especially the Muslims among them, therefore they do not deserve being particularly singled out for insult and abuse. We may not be happy with the system but that does not mean we should carry out what might be counter-productive in Islam. Islam frowns at rebellions and insurrections.

May Allaah protect the Muslims.
