O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, Write...
'Aqeedah of Al-Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thauree [RahimahuLlaah]

Muhammad bn ‘AbdirRahman bn Al’Abbaas narrated told us: Abul Fadl Shu’ayb bn Muhammad bn ArRaajiyaan narrated to us: ‘Alee bn Har’b Al-Mausoolee narrated to us in the city Samara in year 257 after the Hijrah; he said Shu’ayb bn Har’b said: I said to Abu Abdillâh Sufyân bn Sa’îd Ath-Thaurî: ‘Narrate something to me from the Sunnah with which Allâh the Mighty Lord will benefit me such that when I stand before Him and He asks me where I have heard it I would say: O my Lord, it was Sufyân Ath-Thaurî that narrated it to me, so I took it from him, so save me and hold him responsible.

He [Sufyân Ath-Thaurî] said: ‘O Shu’ayb, I tell you emphatically, write: In the Name of Allâh the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful, the Qur’aan is the Word of Allâh, uncreated. It came from Him and would go back to him. Whoever says other than this is a Kâfir. Eemaan [entails] statement, action and intention; it increases and decreases. It increases with obedience to Allâh and decreases with disobedience. No statement is acceptable except with action, and no statement and action except with [good] intention. Whereas no statement, action and intention are acceptable except they are in conformity with the Sunnah.’

Shu’ayb said: I said to him: ‘O Father of ‘Abdullâh, what is conformity with the Sunnah?’ He replied: ‘Holding the view that Abu Bakr and Umar are superior [to the rest of the Companions], may Allâh be pleased with them both.

O Shu’ayb, what you write will not benefit you until you prefer ‘Uthmân and ‘Alee to those after them.

O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, what you write will not benefit you until you do not testify the Jannah and the Hell for anybody except the Ten whom the Messenger of Allâh testified the Jannah for; all of them from Quraysh.

O Shu’ayb Son of Har'b, what you write will not benefit you until you see the permissibility of wiping over the leather socks without removing them, that you believe that is better than you wash the feet [so far you have met the condition of wiping over them].

O Shu’ayb Son of Har'b, what you write will not benefit you until you see that it is better to conceal ‘Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem’ in Salat than saying it loud.

O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, what you write will not benefit you until you believe in preordainment, its good and bad, sweet and bitter; that everything is from Allâh the Mighty and Most Sublime.

O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, by Allâh, Allâh did not say what the Qadariyyah [the rejecters of preordainment] say, neither did the Angels say it nor the Prophets. The people of Jannah did not say it or the people of hell. Their brother, Iblis, upon him is Allâh’s curse, did not say it too.’

Allâh the Mighty Lord said:

أفرأيت من اتخذ إلهه هواه وأضله الله على علم وختم على سمعه وقلبه وجعل على بصره غشاوة فمن يهديه من بعد الله أفلا تذكرون

Have you seen Him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his Ilâh (God), and Allâh knowing (him as such), left Him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will Guide Him after Allâh? Will you not then remember? [Jaathiyyah: 23].

He the Mighty also said:

وما تشاءون إلا أن يشاء الله

But you cannot will, unless Allâh wills. [Insân: 30]

The Angels said:

They (angels) said: "Glory be to you, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is you, the All-Knower, the All-Wise." [Al-Baqarah: 32]

Prophet Musa [alayhissalaam]said:

إن هي إلا فتنتك تضل بها من تشاء وتهدي من تشاء

...it is Only Your trial by which you lead astray whom you will, and keep guided whom you will... [‘Araaf: 155]

Prophet Nuh [alayhissalaam] said:

ولا ينفعكم نصحي إن أردت أن أنصح لكم إن كان الله يريد أن يغويكم هو ربكم وإليه ترجعون

"And my advice will not profit you, even if I wish to give you good counsel, if Allâh's will is to keep you astray. He is your Lord! And to him you shall return." [Huud: 34]

Prophet Shu’ayb [alayhissalaam] said:

وما يكون لنا أن نعود فيها إلا أن يشاء الله ربنا وسع ربنا كل شيء علما

...and it is not for us to return to it unless Allâh, our Lord, should will. Our Lord comprehends all things in His Knowledge... [‘Araaf: 89]

The people of Jannah said:

الحمد لله الذي هدانا لهذا وما كنا لنهتدي لولا أن هدانا الله

...All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, who has guided us to this, never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allâh had guided us! [‘Araaf: 43]

The people of hell said:

غلبت علينا شقوتنا وكنا قوما ضالين

They will say: "Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were (an) erring people. [Mu’minûn: 106]

And their brother Iblis, upon him is the curse of Allâh, said:

رب بما أغويتني

O My Lord! Because you misled me... [Hijr: 39]

O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, what you write will not benefit you until you see the permissibility of Salat behind every pious and sinful person [who is a Muslim] and that Jihad continues until the Day of Resurrection. So also is being patient under the leadership of an unjust or just ruler.

Shu’ayb said: O Father of 'Abdullâh, ‘Do you mean all the Salat?’ He said, ‘No. But Jum’ah and Eid Prayers. Pray behind anyone you meet, as for other than those, you can make a choice, in that case, do not pray except behind the one you trust and know belongs to Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jamâ’ah.’

O Shu’ayb Son of Har’b, when you stand before Allâh the Mighty and the Most Sublime and He asks you about this report, say: ‘O my Lord, it was Sufyân the Son of Sa’îd Ath-Thaurî that narrated it to me.’ Then you can leave me with my Lord the Mighty and Most Sublime.
