The Excellence of Words of Remembrance

[From the Preface of Hisnu Muslim]

Allaah, the Mighty, said:

"Therefore remember Me. I will remember you, and be grateful to Me and never be ungrateful to Me." [Al-Baqarah:152]

"O you who believe! Remember Allaah with much remembrance." [Al-Ahzaab:41]

"...and the men and the women who remember Allaah much, Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward." [Al-Ahzaab:35]

"And remember your Lord by your tongue and within yourself, humbly and with fear without loudness in words in the mornings, and in the afternoons, and be not of those who are neglectful." [Al-A'raaf:205]

The Apostle of Allaah (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam) said:

'The similitude of he who remembers Allaah and he who does not remember Allaah is like that of the living and the dead.' [Al-Bukhaari (11/208) and Muslim who has this version: 'The similitude of a house where Allaah is remembered and the another where Allaah is not remembered is like that of the living and the dead.' 1/539.]

And he said (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam):

'Should I not inform you all of the best of your deeds; their purest with your Possessor and their loftiest in your levels; (deeds) that are better for you than if you spend gold and silver (in charity), and which are better for you than meeting your enemies whereby you cut off their necks or they cut off yours?' They (the Companions) said: 'Please do.' He said : 'Remembering Allaah, the Most High.' [At-Tirmidhi 5/459, Ibn Maajah 2/1245. See Sahih Ibn Maajah 2/316 and Sahih At-Tirmidhi 3/139 (of which both were written by Ash-Shaykh Al-Albaani (may Allaah bestow mercy on him))]

He also said (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam):

'Allaah the Most High says: I am with my slave's thought about Me; and I am with him when he remembers Me. Thus if he remembers Me in himself, I will remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I will remember him in a gathering better than theirs; if he seeks closeness to Me by a Shibr [the distance between the little finger and the thumb when all the fingers are widened], I will seek closeness to him by a Dhiraa' [the distance between the edge of the elbow and the tip of the middle finger.], and if he seeks closeness to Me by a Dhiraa', I will seek closeness to him by two Dhiraa'; if he approaches Me by walking, I will approach him by hastening.' [Al-Bukhaari 8/171, Muslim 4/2061; the wording is Al-Bukhaari's.]

And on the authority of Abdullah bn Busr (may Allaah be pleased with him); that a man said: 'O Allaah's Apostle, indeed the canons of Islam have become too much for me (to carry out). Tell me something that I can always adhere to.' Then Allaah's Apostle said: 'Your tongue should not cease from being moist with remembrance of Allaah.' [At-Tirmidhi 5/458, Ibn Maajah 2/1246. See Sahih At-Tirmidhi 3/139 and Sahih Ibn Maajah 2/317.]

And he said: 'Whoever reads a letter in the Book of Allaah will receive one reward, and one reward comes with ten of its like. I do not say Alif-Laam-Mîm is a letter. Verily Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Mîm is a letter.' [At-Tirmidhi 5/175. See Ash-Shaykh Al-Albaani's Sahîh At-Tirmidhi 3/9 and Sahîhul-Jaami' As-Saghîr 5/340.]

'Uqbah b. Aamir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: 'The Apostle of Allaah (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam)came out and we were sitting on a porch then he said, 'Who among you will like to go out in the morning everyday to the valley of But'haan or Al-Aqîq and come back with two large she-camels without committing any sin or severing kinship ties?' We replied, 'O Apostle of Allaah, all of us will like it.' Then he said, 'Will any of you not go to the mosque and learn or recite two Verses from Allaah's' Book, the Mighty and Majestic? That would be better for him than two she-camels; and three Verses would be better for him than three she-camels, four Verses would be better than four she-camels, and so on and so forth.' [Muslim 1/553]

He (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam) also said:

'Whoever sits and does not mention the Name of Allaah (before he stands up), will find it a source of woe from Allaah. Whoever lies down to sleep and does not mention the Name of Allaah before getting up, will find it a source of woe from Allaah.' [Abu Daawud 4/264. See Ash-Shaykh Al-Albaani's Sahîhul-Jaami' As-Saghîr 5/342.]

The Prophet (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam) also said:

'No people will sit in a gathering without mentioning Allaah and without invoking Allaah's blessing on their Prophet, except that it will be a source of woe upon them. Thus if Allaah wishes He will punish them, and if He wishes He will forgive them.' [At-Tirmidhi. See Ash-Shaykh Al-Albaani's Sahîh At-Tirmidhi 3/140.]

He (salaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam) also said:

'No people will rise from a gathering wherein they did not mention the Name of Allaah; it will be as if they are getting off a dead donkey's rotting back, and it will be a cause of anguish for them.' [Abu Daawud 4/264, Ahmad 2/389. See Ash-Shaykh Al-Albaani's Sahîhul-Jaami' 5/176.]
