Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahuLlaah – was asked: What quality a Muslim soldier should possess?

He answered: ‘Among the qualities of a Muslim soldier is that he must be religious and brave.

He said further: ‘People can be divided into four: The peak of them are those that are religious and the same time brave, then those who are religious but are coward then vice versa: [those that are brave but not religious] then those who lack both: [they are not religious and are not brave].’
