It is common on the tongue of average Yoruba people to regard 'idol worshiping' as an ancestral religion (Esin Abalaye) while others are strange religions (Esin Ajoji).

It is unanimously agreed among the people of the books and Muslims that, Nabiyy Aadam was the first man, and he was neither Idolator nor Jew nor Christian, but Monotheist.

 Allaah says:

??????????? ????? ??? ???????? ????????? ??????? ???????? ??????? ???? ??????????? ??????????

Then Adam received from his Lord Words. And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful. (Baqarah:37).

Allaah says:

And they say: By no means leave your gods, nor leave Wadd, nor Suwa; nor Yaghus, and Yauq and Nasr. (Nooh:23)

Dr. Muhammad bn AbdiLlaahi al Habd?n headed this ayah with "The Epoch of the (First) Occurrence of Associating Partner with Allaah and its Cause"(see at Tawdihaatu-l-Kaashifaat p.37).

Abdullaah Ibn `Abbas narrated: ?All the idols which were worshipped by the people of Noah were worshipped by the Arabs later on. As for the idol Wadd, it was worshipped by the tribe of Kalb at Daumat-al-Jandal; Suwa' was the idol of (the tribe of) Murad and then by Ban, Ghutaif at Al-Jurf near Saba; Yauq was the idol of Hamdan, and Nasr was the idol of Himyr, the branch of Dhi-al-Kala. The names (of the idols) formerly belonged to some pious men of the people of Noah, and when they died Satan inspired their people to (prepare and place idols at the places where they used to sit, and to call those idols by their names. The people did so, but the idols were not worshipped till those people (who initiated them) had died and the origin of the idols had become obscure, whereupon people began worshipping them.(Saheeh al Bukhaaree #4776). (The Book of the First p.17).

The cited verse and report show that, idols later came in after thousands of years to the demise of Nabiyy Aadam and it was started by the people of Nabiyy Nooh, thus it worthy being called 'the strange and innovated religion). So, it is an exaggeration to say; Idol Worshiping is the classical religion. Muslims are obligated to disregard and disbelief in this erroneous saying.
