Aboo Hurairah – may Allaah be pleased with him - said: ‘Among the supplications of the Messenger of Allaah – sallaLlaahu alahyi wa sallam – was:

Allahumma innee a’oodhubika min jaaris-suu wa min zaujin tushayyibunee qablal masheeb wa min waladin yakoonu ‘alayya rabban wa min maalin yakoonu ‘alayya ‘adhaaban wa min khaleelin maakirin ‘aynau taraanee wa qalbu-hu tar’aanee, in ra’a hasanatan dafana-ha wa idhaa ra’a sayyi’atan adhaa’a’haa.

[O Allaah! I seek refuge in You from the evil neighbour, and from a wife driving me old before I come of age, and from a son lording himself over me, and from a wealth becoming a woe for me, and from a foxy friend who sees me with his eyes but his heart covets (evil) for me, if he sees a good thing (about me) he hides it and if he sees an evil thing (about me), he spreads it about].’

Recorded by al-Imaam at-Tabraanee in ‘ad-Du’aa (1339)’ and graded saheeh by Al-Imaam al-Albaanee in As-Saheehah (3137).

According to the hadeeth, the close sources of danger that can easily destroy a person are:

An evil neighbour,
A nagging wife,
An overbearing son,
An evil-omen wealth,
And an artful, tricky and cunning friend.

The fifth has the greatest evil adjectives. May Allaah save us from such, and from others.

Indeed, only Allaah can save from them.
