Al-Imaam adh-Dhahabi - rahimahullah - quoted 'ar-Radd Alal-Jahmiyyah' of Ibn Abee Haatim - rahimahumallah - that the duo of Abu Haatim and Abu Zur'ah narrated to him a report about a man in Basra who was a great scholar of the Qur'aan but who believed that the Qur'aan is created.
That the man swore one day: 'If this Qur'aan is not created, Allaah should remove it from my heart.'
After that the man completely forgot the Qur'aan such that when they reminded him of 'Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem' he would say, 'yes, yes, I used to know that.'
