Translation: Kamal Ololade Ahmad

A little deed but huge reward

Four Rak'ah after 'Ishaa will be equated to similar rak'ah observed during Laylatu-l-Qadr.

On the authority of Abdullah Ibn 'Amr who said:

 «مَنْ صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ كُنَّ كَقَدْرِهِنَّ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ».

"Whoever observes four Rak'ah after 'Ishaa, it shall be equivalent to a similar rak'ah in Laylatu-l-Qadr"

This is a very sound chain based on the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim

Also on the authority of 'Aisha (may Allaah be pleased with her) who said:

  «أَرْبَعٌ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ يُعْدَلْنَ بِمِثْلِهِنَّ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ».

"Four Rak'ah after 'Ishaa will be equated (in reward) with a similar rak'ah observed during Laylatu-l-Qadr."

The chain is authentic based on the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim.

And on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud who said:

"Whoever observes four Rak'ah after 'Ishaa without breaking between them with Tasleem, it will be made equal to a similar rak'ah observed in Laylatu-l-Qadr"

This is sound chain to Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud and its ruling is of Marfuu' (Hadeeth with a chain reaching the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم)

This narration mentions that it is to be observed with one Tasleem and this is a rare benefit, so hold fast to it diligently.

Shaykh Al-Baani (may Allaah have mercy of him) said: The Hadeeth is authentically traced to a number of the Sahaabah. And even though it is traced to the companions it has the ruling of hadeeth that is traced to the prophet because it is not something that could be said of person opinion as it is apparent.

Shaykh Abdul Muhsin al-'Abbad (may Allaah preserve him) said: It is authentically reported from a number of the Companions, from 'Aaisha (may Allaah be pleased with her), Abdullaah Ibn Mas'ud (may Allaah be pleased with him) and Abdullaah Ibn 'Amr)

The Hanaabilah mentioned as contained in Kashfu al-Qinaa' that: "It is recommended to observe four Rak'ah, and it is instructive to know that these four Rak'ah is not from the Sunan ar-Rawaatib (the standard voluntary Salaah before and after the five daily Salawāt), and it is not from the Qiyamu-l-Layl in its specific meaning. It is just an absolute Nafil and not from the known Nafil after 'Ishaa. The best is to observe the four with one Tasleem based on what is established from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allaah be pleased with him) and it is desirable that one keeps to it in order to gain the great reward mentioned in these reports."

From those who acted upon this Hadeeth:

'Aliy Ibn Abi Taalib and Sa'eed Ibn Jubayr and he is the most prominent of the companions of Abdullah Ibn 'Abbaas.
