Translations and Annotations by Misbaah Olagunju (Abu Aamaal)
Preface:
This is a compilation of statements from a number of journals written by our Shaykh Muhammad bin Umar BÄzmÅ«l –hafidhahullah–, and the Shaykh has permitted us to compile them in a single book so as to maximize the benefits by Allah's leave, and nothing (of it) is from the Shaykh except that which is correct and to Allah belongs the praise. And may Allah reward him with much goodness.
[1] My Religion Taught Me:
That the child is from the labour of his parents and whatsoever he (the child) does of good deed is established for his parents, and that whatsoever he does of evil is not established for his father, rather it is for his own self.
Allah the Exalted said:
ÙˆÙŽØ£ÙŽÙ† لَّیۡسَ Ù„ÙÙ„Û¡Ø¥Ùنسَـٰن٠إÙلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
"And that man can have nothing but what he does (good or bad)". - [Surah An-Najm 39]
The Exalted also said:
قَالَ یَـٰنÙÙˆØ٠إÙنَّهÙÛ¥ لَیۡسَ Ù…ÙÙ†Û¡ Ø£ÙŽÙ‡Û¡Ù„ÙÙƒÙŽÛ– Ø¥ÙنَّهÙÛ¥ عَمَلٌ غَیۡر٠صَـٰلÙØࣲۖ Ùَلَا تَسۡـَٔلۡن٠مَا لَیۡسَ Ù„ÙŽÙƒÙŽ بÙÙ‡ÙÛ¦ عÙلۡمٌۖ Ø¥ÙنّÙیۤ أَعÙظÙÙƒÙŽ Ø£ÙŽÙ† تَكÙونَ Ù…ÙÙ†ÙŽ ٱلۡجَـٰهÙÙ„Ùینَ
He said: "O Nuh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorants." - [Surah Hud 46]
The Exalted again said:
وَلَا تَزÙر٠وَازÙرَةࣱ ÙˆÙزۡرَ Ø£Ùخۡرَىٰۚ ÙˆÙŽØ¥ÙÙ† تَدۡع٠مÙØ«Û¡Ù‚ÙŽÙ„ÙŽØ©ÙŒ Ø¥Ùلَىٰ ØÙÙ…Û¡Ù„Ùهَا لَا ÛŒÙØÛ¡Ù…ÙŽÙ„Û¡ Ù…Ùنۡه٠شَیۡءࣱ ÙˆÙŽÙ„ÙŽÙˆÛ¡ كَانَ ذَا Ù‚Ùرۡبَىٰۤۗ Ø¥Ùنَّمَا تÙنذÙر٠ٱلَّذÙینَ یَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهÙÙ… بÙٱلۡغَیۡب٠وَأَقَامÙوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۚ ÙˆÙŽÙ…ÙŽÙ† تَزَكَّىٰ ÙÙŽØ¥Ùنَّمَا یَتَزَكَّىٰ Ù„ÙÙ†ÙŽÙۡسÙÙ‡ÙÛ¦Ûš ÙˆÙŽØ¥ÙÙ„ÙŽÙ‰ ٱللَّه٠ٱلۡمَصÙیرÙ
"And no bearer of burdens shall bear another's burden, and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. You (O Muhammad - sallaallahu alahyi wa sallam) can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen, and perform As-Salat (IqamatasSalat). And he who purifies himself (from all kinds of sins), then he purifies only for the benefit of his ownself. And to Allah is the (final) Return (of all)." - [Surah Faatir 18]
Translator's notes:
From the Verse from Surah An-Najm, it is clear that a person can only benefit from what is for him in deeds in terms of reward in this life and the hereafter, and that the children a person gives birth to are from his earnings from which he can reap benefits. To establish this Al-Imaam bin Katheer said under the exegesis of that verse:
"As for the report narrated by Muslim in his saheeh, on the authority of Abu Hudhayfah who said: the messenger of Allah –Allah raise his rank and grant him peace– said: "Whenever a man dies all his deeds are halted except for any of the following three: a righteous child praying for him, or a continuing charity after his demise, or knowledge he taught which continues to benefit", these three things in reality are from his toils and efforts and deeds, as it was reported in a Hadith:
عَنْ عَائÙØ´ÙŽØ©ÙŽ قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسÙول٠اللَّه٠صَلَّى اللَّه٠عَلَيْه٠وَسَلَّمَ : " Ø¥Ùنَّ أَطْيَبَ مَا Ø£ÙŽÙƒÙŽÙ„ÙŽ الرَّجÙÙ„Ù Ù…Ùنْ كَسْبÙÙ‡ÙØŒ ÙˆÙŽØ¥Ùنَّ وَلَدَ الرَّجÙÙ„Ù Ù…Ùنْ كَسْبÙÙ‡Ù ".
On the authority of Aa'isha –Allah be pleased with her– who said: the messenger of Allah –Allah raise his rank and grant him peace– said: "The purest of what a man eat is from his earnings, and surely a man's child is from his earnings" - (Sunan An:Nasaa'i: 4449)" [Tafseer Al-Kareem-ur-Rahman]
In another variation of the hadith reported in the Sunan of Imam Abu Daawūd (and all the ashaabu sunan have versions of the report), also via Ummul Muumineen Aa'isha, he –Allah raise his rank and grant him peace– said:
وَلَد٠الرَّجÙÙ„Ù Ù…Ùنْ كَسْبÙÙ‡ÙØŒ Ù…Ùنْ أَطْيَب٠كَسْبÙÙ‡ÙØŒ ÙÙŽÙƒÙÙ„Ùوا Ù…Ùنْ أَمْوَالÙÙ‡Ùمْ
"The child of a man is from his earnings, from the purest of his earnings, therefore eat from the wealth of your children" - (Sunan Abu Daawūd: 3529)
And as for the last verse the Shaykh quoted from surah FÄtir, this is to establish that though a father (or mother) is naturally entitled to the material earnings of their children and also share in the rewards of good deeds done by their children (by extension), this is not the same for his misgivings. That is why Allah said:
وَلَا تَزÙر٠وَازÙرَةࣱ ÙˆÙزۡرَ Ø£Ùخۡرَىٰۚ ÙˆÙŽØ¥ÙÙ† تَدۡع٠مÙØ«Û¡Ù‚ÙŽÙ„ÙŽØ©ÙŒ Ø¥Ùلَىٰ ØÙÙ…Û¡Ù„Ùهَا لَا ÛŒÙØÛ¡Ù…ÙŽÙ„Û¡ Ù…Ùنۡه٠شَیۡءࣱ ÙˆÙŽÙ„ÙŽÙˆÛ¡ كَانَ ذَا Ù‚Ùرۡبَى
"And no bearer of burdens shall bear another's burden, and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin"
Al-Imaam Al-Baghawy said concerning this verse, Ibn Abbas –Allah be pleased with him and his father– said:
قَالَ ابْن٠عَبَّاسÙ: يَلْقَى الْأَب٠وَالْأÙمّ٠ابْنَه٠ÙÙŽÙŠÙŽÙ‚ÙولÙ: يَا بÙنَيَّ اØْمÙلْ عَنّÙÙŠ بَعْضَ Ø°ÙÙ†ÙوبÙÙŠ. ÙÙŽÙŠÙŽÙ‚ÙولÙ: لَا أَسْتَطÙيع٠ØَسْبÙÙŠ مَا عَلَيَّ.
"The father and the mother will meet their child and say: "O my child bear on my behalf some of the burdens of my sins". And the child will say "I'm not able to I'm overwhelmed with mine"" - [Tafseer Mu'Älim At-TanzÄ«l]
And that ends the first lesson.
