Translation and Transcription: Hamzah Shareef Aboo Ubayy
From a question-and-answer segment of one of his recent lectures.
Dr Sharaf Gbadebo of Al-Madeenah Institute Ogbomoso, was asked:
'Who has the right to give out a lady's hand in marriage?'
Dr Sharaf: ...it is upon you to obey them (your parents); your father is a Muslim, if a religious leader orders you to do something, your father's (order) must come first provided that what your father orders you to do is not against what Allaah and His Prophet - sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam - said even if it goes against what the religious leader said. I hope we can understand?
The various societies people joined is what usually gives birth to such questions. They will say, 'a particular Ameer is greater than your father.' Hear them! Who is that damn Ameer? That's how the Ameer would give out a lady's hand in marriage without the knowledge of her parent. Whosoever does that would face the consequences: I hope we can understand? They have now turned females to something like gloves. (That was how a sister said) when someone proposed to her and she said that would be possible if the Ameer approved of it! The brother asked whom the Ameer was; that what if her father granted it and the Ameer did not? She said it wouldn't be possible, ehn! Their mind has been beclouded.
That's why we used to wonder what is your business with those useless and doomed groups; is that the Islam Allaah sent the Prophet with? Why is it that after Allaah has given you freedom you went to turn yourself into a slave? That's how someone said they are into one group somewhere in this land, I said in this land? She replied in the affirmative. She mentioned the name of the society and I was surprised... They said their Ameer is the person that gives out their hands in marriage; they do not need to go back to their fathers. So (things went wrong) along the way that's why she brought her case, I told her: 'Now go back to meet that Ameer; it was he that spoilt it that should repair it.' She said: They were very angry because she brought the case to me. I said: 'Yes, I want to see that Ameer myself.' Then they called me, they said "The issue brought by the lady, please we want to withdraw it, we would settle it.' I said:' Who are those (that will settle it)?' They didn't want the secret to be revealed.' 'We need not come, if she comes we will settle it.'

From the foregoing, do not join any society, there's no society that you will join; you would later realise it is just an ideology. These societies you join is being used to serve some people, Look at the day Tableegh has been founded, it is being used to enslave people for Iliyas Khandalawi in his grave. Ahmadiyyah is being used to enslave people for Ahmad Ghulam Qadiani in his grave, All ideologies (societies) being established; whether the founder is dead or not, it is being used to enslave people. What has now made you a slave?!, You have been enslaved and you're still satisfied with it, so do not join any society, Islam is what you should follow. Don't turn yourself to a person that will be drawn by somebody else like a goat.
In these various societies, women are the major victims; they give out their hands in marriage freely. They have usurped them from their parents; parents don't have any say on such children.
I seek Allaah's refuge from Shaytan the accursed. For this reason, there's no order from any Ameer; obey Allaah and your parents. But (in case) we have a leader who is ruling by the Sharee'ah, it is obligatory on us all to obey him.
