Series of reports on the worrisome condition of Muslims in Adelekites has filled the air. Despite, the prospective audience continues to be indifferent and nonchalant to the news. Whether it is because the reports are political in nature, not factual enough or some other hypocritical responses accompany them that is yet to be determined. Adeleke University is a living hell for Muslim students.
The school made it compulsory for every student, Muslim inclusive, to attend all her Sabattarian worship services. A section of the clearance form is set aside for chaplaincy (Section A, as a matter of fact). It is monitored in such a way that it can never be boycotted by anyone unless such person will not proceed with the clearance because subsequent sections cannot be cleared without it. An attendance worship card is made specially for the purpose and absence from worship service attracts five (5) demerit points. As if the absence demerit points are not enough a sanction, failure to play along with them in the chapels during worship session warrants special sanctions. Most times the attendance card of the purported defiant student is ceased and taken to the chapel authority while the owner is summoned to face the panel. The hall admins will, nevertherless, not spare to brake into the hall rooms to fish out anyone who hides inside and refused to go to services. They send them to the guardroom. The victim may spend the rest of the day there in.
Worship centers are situated all over the faculties and all students are dispersed randomly therein. Yet no single mosque structure, no one of bamboo trees nor of something less. Accepting the fact that the campus mosque-free and that one will not get erected any soon, Muslim students resort to observing their five daily prayers under a mango tree at the back of the campus’s bakery "but the security officers mustered around (for this purpose perhaps) bang on us many times to interrupt our peaceful prayer sessions." They threaten us not to hold prayers there without any prohibitive law or rule to show. The naive Muslim females are not spared in this religion trauma and agony being suffered. They are subjected to biased treatment for using their hijabs. “Use one that doesn’t cover more than your hair”, they would order. “You go back in and remove you scarf or adjust it (when it covers the neck), they would scream. Wonders shall never end! You won’t find it funny if I tell you she may leave half of her back open, no big deal to give her shirt some partings and flash her skinning thighs, of course she is still good to go and is decent when her cleavage sparks under the top – that is holy of her. You did not find all those funny right?For God sake these are the faith-based values?! To my greatest disappointment, these laws are abstract ones stemming from their discriminatory hatred for Islam. I mean, no single article provides for it in the student handbook.
Now what justifies the provision of the handbook under an article titled Philosophy which reads that … “Student are admitted without decimation against gender, cultutre, religion, …” oh!, discrimination will impliedly continue after admission! I suppose they are justified now.
Add to these predicaments that pastors will not hesitate to dissuade Muslim students from Islam whenever they encounter them in camera. Some Christian lecturers go to the extent of threatening our brilliant brothers and sisters with mark deduction and some, carry-over if they do not reaccept the lord Jesus Christ and convert to Christianity. Just so many more of unjust acts pestering the pure, balanced state of minds of the Muslims.
