A Dog Once Shared in the Blessings of Some Virtuous People

Allaah the Mighty said:

وَكَلۡبُهُمۡ بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيۡهِ بِالۡوَصِيۡدِ‌

'And their dog stretched forth its arms in the threshold.' Kahf:18

Ibn 'Atiyyah commented:

'My father narrated to me : I heard Abul Fadl al-Jawharee delivering his sermon on the minbar in the main masjid of Egypt in the year 469AH saying: Whoever loves the virtuous people will share from their blessings; a dog loved a people, it accompanied them and Allaah mentioned it in His Glorious Book.'

I, Ibn' Atiyyah, say: If a dog could attain this lofty height due to being in the company of virtuous and righteous people such that Allaah would mention it in His Book, what will you say about the monotheistic believers who mix with and love the righteous people? There is in that an encouragement to the believers who may not be high in virtues but love the Messenger of Allaah - sallaallahu alahyi wa sallam -
