Fifth Point

The Learner of Islamic Knowledge Should Make Judicious Use of His Day and Night

If a learner has been found wanting in the proper use of his day and night, it is not too late for him to make amends and make better use of the time remaining in his life.

A learner who is keen on memorisation should know that the best time for it is at dawn. The early morning is the best time for research, while writing and authoring are best undertaken before noon. The night is suitable for general reading as well as group study.

There is a statement to this effect from Al-Imaam al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadi. He said:

“Memorising at night is more beneficial than memorising during the day. Learning when one is hungry is better than learning when one is full.”

He also said:

“The best places for memorisation are rooms and other places far removed from distractions.”

He further stated:

“It is not advisable to engage in memorisation in places where there are plants, greenery, flowing rivers, streets, or noisy surroundings. Such places often prevent the mind from attaining the necessary level of concentration.”
