Questioner: Where is the proof that we can dye our hair and beards?

Dr Sharaf: (The proof) is the hadeeth of the Prophet - sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam.

The father of Abubakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) was brought to the Prophet - sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam - as an old man, all the hair of his head and beard had turned white. The Prophet - sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam - ordered that his hair should be dyed but not to black rather any other colour.

This is because Allaah has cursed whosoever dyes his grey head to black.

Therefore, if you want to dye your hair or beard, dye it to any color other than black. An example is the use of henna by ladies.

The best therefore is to allow all the hair of the head turn white. All the hair; just as this hadith pointed to it that Abu Quhaafa's hair had become white. Do not dye the scanty white hair on your beard (or head).

Why will you dye your white hair to black? You don't want to become old...?
