Al-Imaam Maalik - rahmatullaah alahyi - said: 'This knowledge (of Islam) cannot be attained until some poverty is tasted.'
The Imaam mentioned what happened to Rabee'ah (one of his teachers in Madeenah) in terms of poverty while the latter was seeking knowledge, that he had to once sell the roof of his house and would pick items, such as raisins and rotten dates, to eat from, in the refuse centres of Madeenah.
