The Muslims have been enjoined to pay more attention to treating the sickness of the heart becuase whoever has a sickly heart will have themselves to blame in this life and most importantly the one to come.
The Khateeb of Masjid at-Tawheed, Oke-Iresi, Ede, Osun State, al-Ustaadh Tawfeeq Olanrewaju, stated this in the Friday sermon he gave on 15th Rabiul Awwal, 1440 (23rd November, 2018) at Masjid Tawheed, Ede.
He mentioned that Allaah the Most High called the attention of His slaves to the fact that He Allaah revealed the Quraan as a warning, mercy and cure to the mankind in general and specifically as a cure to diseases of the heart. He said the scholars of Islam have said that the Quraan is a cure for the sickness of the heart and the soul, and all kinds of sickness that affect man. He asserted that the most dangerous sickness that can befall the humans is the sickness of the heart because it destroys the life and the hereafter of the affected. He said people however pay more attention to ailment of the physical body.
The Imaam further mentioned that there are from amongst the Prophets who were struck by the sickness of the body during their lifetime, he mentioned Prophet Ayoob, Ibraaheem and Prophet Muhammad (may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon them). He stressed that it is the heart that really matters and not the body because it is with the heart that the slave will meet His Lord, he quoted the verse “The day that wealth and children will not be beneficial except he who meets Allaah with a tranquil heart.”
He qouted al-Imaam Muhammad bn Seereen as saying the heart free from sickness is that heart that has three qualities: that knows that Allah is the true Being worthy of worship, that knows that there is no doubt in resurrection and the heart that knows that Allah would resurrect all those in the graves.
He also mentioned that from amongst the sickness of the heart is the sickness of “doubt” and not to have certainty in Allaah. Allaah the Most High says: “In their hearts is sickness and Allaah has increased them in (their) sickness”. The scholars of Islam have said that the sickness referred to in this verse is the sickness of doubt and uncertainty in Allaah and that those who have this kind of sickness in their hearts can never be firm upon Islam and would continue to live in difficulty.
While mentioning the examples of diseases of the heart which he gave as disease of doubts, unbridled desires for unlawful things and desires for the world, the Imaam enjoined the Muslims to eschew all. He qouted some Verses of the Qur'an to buttress his points. He said Allaah the Most High says: “In their hearts is sickness and Allaah has increased them in (their) sickness”. That those who have this kind of sickness in their hearts can never be firm upon Islam and would continue to live in difficulty.
He further said the sickness of desires in the prohibited matters and seeking pleasures in sources not made permissible by Allaah such as lustful glances and speaking evils can be devastating on the soul. He mentioned that Allaah has prohibited the believing women from beautifying their voices in the presence of strange men so that he who has a disease in his heart will not exhibit it.
While speaking about strong desires for the things of this world, he quoted the hadeeth reported by Abdullaah ibn Abbaass, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Prophet Muhammed said that if a man has two big valleys filled with gold or wealth, he would definitely seek the third, nothing can fill the stomach of man except sand, but whoever repents to Allaah, Allaah would accept his repentance.
He also mentioned arrogance, envy and whispers of the devil as other forms of diseases of the heart.
He concluded his sermon by advising the people to seek treatment for the diseases of the heart and that is it the heart that is the most important, that which a servant would meet is Lord with.
