Salafiyyah, Salafism and Conundrums of Young Modernists

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Salafiyyah needs no introduction; it has been phenomenal in the recent past, and it is still. We need not parrot it that the Salafi Da’wah is the Prophetic Da’wah, that is, the Da’wah taught by the Prophet of Islam and his Companions, since the beginning of Islam. Some still do not know this; well we can’t blame them. Aren’t we in a world where the ethos of Islam seem to be at a standstill? Where success is measured in material parameters?

But very saddening that some people after some scanty and miserable years in the modern university come out to fashion out an Islam based on their whims!

It is saddening and disheartening. Pardon the circumlocution. It is high time the modernist voices are told to keep shut for good.

Islam needs not your modernism neither does it need your material grief. The religion is complete and it is perfect.

‘…this day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion…’ [Maaidah: 3]

If It troubles you that no sensible person buys your crap which you call modern Islam, then...

‘…perish in your rage…’ [Aal Imraan. 119]

Didn’t your fathers of old say we need more of Muslim professors and technocrats than scholars of the Qur’aan and Sunnah? Haven’t we got a sizeable number of those professors today, what are they doing? Haven’t they constituted a bloc of Fitnah for the Ummah among which you are a product?

‘They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. [Ar-Room, 7].

We have observed that there are some people in our age bracket that are under the stupor of modernism. They are frenzied and intoxicated by it. They sleep and wake in it. They have been very vigorous with their quills to castigate some few youths, few indeed, who have taken it upon themselves to concentrate their attention on the learning of the Deen. Those other people see it as a crime for a Muslim young person to finish what they call ‘the First Degree’ and then go out in search of the knowledge of the Deen.

To such people, it is ‘waste of Ummah-Human Asset’ for a university graduate who perhaps studied Medicine, Engineering, or… to quest for the knowledge of the Qur’aan and Sunnah. At his age, it is a misplaced priority. He should rather go for a Masters’ Degree, PhD, and other certifications. He should not mind if he does not know how to recite the Book of his Lord, or the words of the Messenger of Allaah – sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam. The Ummah needs him ‘to be at apex bank to present with candour, superior argument and luxurious beard in favour of non interest banking…’, so he needs to hurry up. Someone the Ummah needs to ‘take over from oppressive and repelling academics institutions creating hell for Muslim girls.’ Hasn’t he been well- trained? Didn’t he go to the university?

So what is his problem? Salafism!

Subhaanallaah! See the way these modernists have rubbished the Da’wah of the Prophet – sallallaahu alahyi wa sallam – and slaughtered it on the altar of Maududism and Ikhwanism.

We know Salafiyyah, but his Salafism we do not know save the fact that his pay masters in the UK and US often sing with that coinage.

Yes Salafism is retrogressive, since it is one of the activism out there.

As for Salafiyyah – the Da’wah hinged on the guidance of the Prophet, sallaalhu alahyi wa sallam, it is progressive and perfect.

‘…but most people do not know…’ [Jaathiyah, 26].

So the modernists are warned; face your West, bow to them, dine with them, and worship its god. Do not pry into what you do not know.

‘…and follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not, etc.) that of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allâh). [Israa, 36].

As for we, our models are the likes of Al-Imaam Bukhaari, Muslim, Ahmad, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim, Ibn Hajar, may Allaah bestwo mercy on them all. They were not scumbags like you? Go and read about their life histories and see if any of your models can surpass them.

Can their professors write the like of what was written by Al-Imaam Al-Albaanee from Albania?

Therefore, knowledge of the Qur’aan and Sunnah is the way. It is better than anything you study in the modern university! Let this sink into your head.

The Prophet, sallaalahu alahyi wa sallam, on the authority of the third Khaleefah said:

‘The best of you is he who learns the Qur’aan and teaches it’

Where is your brain then?

Al-Imâm Ash-Shaafi was reported to have composed:

All knowledge save the Qur’aan is a mere preoccupation
Except hadith and the knowledge of jurisprudence in Deen.

The profession you learnt in the university is nothing but a meal ticket like the skill of any artisan. Everyone of you contributes their quota to the Gross Domestic Product. So why bamboozle us with your academic feat? After all when you die, and you are going to die, you will not be buried with your certificates. So what is the problem?

Lest you think we are Yusufiyoon, there is some good in the contemporary knowledge, it is part of the bounties of Allaah over the slaves. Here are we punching this gadget to pass on this message, Ni’mah Wallaahi! And the HTML we used to make it readable for all. We have doctors who help the Muslims in their clinics. An architect and an engineer had done a wonderful job the last time at our Madrasah here. But these people don’t pride their professions over Islam. When you see them you take them for Mallams in Madrasah, and they are. This is what we desire not professions at the detriment of Islam, such that you open a stinking mouth and say those who get busied with the learning of the Deen are retrogressive and waste. May the hand that type, and the mouth that utters that, be despised.

So,

‘... they are not the same...’ [Aal Imraan, 113].

There are among the Ikhwah who are medical doctors, engineers, scientists, etc. that know their limit. They seek the knowledge of the Deen, use their professions to help the cause in anyway, respect the teachers and learners of Islam…

‘And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allâh), then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, thanked and rewarded (by Allâh). [Al-Israa, 19].

But you, who thinks your scanty knowledge about the world is your key to Jannah such that you lampoon the people of knowledge and its learners, be sure that your lot is ignominy unless you repent and chart a new course. That we let you know this, can never be a kaffaarah for you as you have thought.

Peace unto whoever follows the guidance.
