Al-Imaam Ibn Battah al-Ukbaree al-Hanbalee - rahimahullah - was a devout servant of Allaah and an erudite scholar of the Sunnah, in fact one of its big mountains.

Imaam Adh-Dhahabi quoted al-Khateeb with his Isnad saying that when Ibn Battah returned from his rihlah (journey for knowledge), he stayed put in his house for forty years. He was never seen in the market or seen without fasting except on the days of Eid. He used to command good, no news of bad happening would reach him except that he would strive to change it.

Imaam Adh-Dhahabi said further: 'But despite his honour, Ibn Battah had auhaam (errors in reports) and ghalat (mistakes).'

Ubaydullaah al-Azharee said: 'Ibn Battah is weak (in hadeeth reports).'

Imaam adh-Dhahabi mentioned some hadeeth where Ibn Battah made some grave errors and stated: 'Even beside the above, the Shaykh is weak.'

(He wrote al-Ibaanatul Al-Kubra then al-Ibaanatul as-Sughrah, whoever is conversant with knowledge of hadeeth would not fail to see certain hadeeth reports that are clearly weak in those two books nevertheless the books, in the aspect of its Aqeedah content, is a reference point for the people of Sunnah such that Ibn Battah is regarded as an Imaam).

He died 387AH, may Allaah bestow His mercy on him.
